We left Oriental at 7:00 am heading to the Intracoastal Waterway. We had company on the Waterway, it was obvious many other boaters had been waylaid by the Nor’easter last weekend and were making good use of this great weather. We made our way down Adams Creek, passed Beaufort, Morehead City and along Bogue Sound to Swansboro, NC. Saw our first dolphins this trip! We were headed to Caspers Marina to top off the fuel tanks. Caspers has the least expensive fuel in the area. We arrived at Caspers at 2:30 pm.
We got word that the ICW would be closed Wednesday morning, November 5th, for training exercises by the Marine Corps base at Camp Lejeune. It was not scheduled to reopen until noon. Steve did not want to get in a line-up situation with dozens of other boats trying not to run into each other so we decided to get breakfast. A dock hand at Caspers suggested we go to Yana Mama’s for their famous fritters. We wander the cute town of Swansboro, head into Yana Mama’s and order the fritters. Holy crap, it was a pile of sugar! Tasty but holy crap!
We leave Caspers Marina at 11:00 am. The ICW does not open at noon. We end up fighting the current with dozens of other boats, sailboats that get too far outside the channel run aground, its a real cluster. The ICW finally opens but its slow going with all the traffic so we decide to stop for the night at Swan Point Marina in Sneads Ferry, NC arriving without incident at 2:25. Whew! Where’s the beer!!
