“Wheels up” at 7:30 am for the Hollywood Blvd Bridge opening. The transit from Hollywood Beach to Key Largo on the Intracoastal Waterway offers many different changes in scenery. From huge beach condo high-rise construction areas in Hollywood Beach, sections of majestic sprawling mansions, many inhabited and uninhabited islands in northern Biscayne Bay from Bal Harbour to Key Biscayne, the skyscrapers and congestion of Downtown Miami, the massive Biscayne Bay and miles of uninhabited mangrove covered shores in the bay and sounds south of Miami. The boat traffic we encountered was just as varied from jet skis to big ships and everything in between.
We watched the skyline of Miami SLOWLY fade into the distance as we cruised the length of the huge Biscayne Bay. We cruised through Card Sound, Barnes Sound then tucked into Jewfish Creek arriving at Gilbert’s Resort and Marina, Key Largo at 3:00 pm. We joined the fun at Gilbert’s giant Tiki Hut Bar that was hoping on this Friday night. At 5:30 we strolled to the beach at Gilbert’s to watch the sunset and the large group of people hoping to see the green flash….no green flash tonight.
