Its time to head out and see some old haunts on the barrier island of Great Guana Cay. The weather was beautiful today and we spent part of the morning cruising to Guana Cay and anchored in Fischers Bay.
Great Guana Cay is a long narrow islet in The Bahamas, 7 miles long and has a five and a half mile long stretch of beach. It is about 8 miles from Marsh Harbour. Great Guana Cay’s settlement is known for its loyalist culture and architecture, as well as its social scene. Several traditional loyalist homes are in the settlement, which wraps around a natural harbor.
Wikipedia: “Great Guana Cay is an Abaco barrier island that hosts elkhorn and staghorn coral reefs. It also contains a large amount of virgin forest, where migrating birds and Abaco endemic species live. Loggerhead, green, and hawksbill sea turtles nest on the island’s beaches.” “A cove on the island called Kidd’s Cove was named after the pirate William Kidd.”
We set the anchor in a sandy spot and took the dingy into the beach at Grabbers Bed Bar and Grill where we met up with our friend Tony. We called our friends, Ron and Erin, and Erin picked us up in the settlement with her golf cart and took us to their new house (new since we were in the Bahamas last). After showing us around and some catching up, we headed out on that beautiful 5 and a half mile long beach for a walk…except for Ron, he was working on a project at the house.
We headed back toward the boat exploring along the way then all met up again at Ron and Erin’s for a fun and delicious dinner!
