Windy Again! Playing in Marsh Harbour and Tahiti Beach, Bahamas

Damn Spring winds!! We stayed at the marina for several days, playing around Marsh Harbour until the wind laid down again. Next time we’ll come in May, June and July when the Sea of Abaco and the Atlantic are flat! We know better, Steve lived here for several years for god sakes, but we didn’t want to wait any longer this year to get back to the Bahamas. Our original plans were to stay for 4 months which would have put us through May and well into June but…best laid plans…   The boat developed a stabilizer leak so now we’re planning to head back to Florida before the end of this month. Bummer! And just FYI, 10 days is too long for a guest to stay on a 48’ boat! Just say no! A week, okay.

During our cruising intermission due to wind, we entertained ourselves with kayaking, snorkeling at Mermaid Reef, kicking back at the marina’s pool and lots of beach time.  The weather (less wind) began to cooperate and we were back at Tahiti Beach on the 10th!!! More kayaking, swimming, snorkeling, dinghy cruising and, of course, beach time! Love this tranquil and beautiful place!!!

Several fires recently broke out on Abaco and brought back many memories for Steve of forest fires fought and managed during the years he was a vital member of the Marsh Harbour Volunteer Fire Department. During those years, he was respectfully and affectionately known as “Fireman Steve” throughout the local government and the entire island of Abaco.

From The Abaconian (Abacos news source): “The Marsh Harbour Volunteer Fire and Rescue (MHVFR) service has been busy protecting properties over the last few weeks from several forest fires that have threatened homes, farms and utility poles among other things.

“The latest spate of fires have been edging closer to populated areas like Sweeting’s Village and Spring City as fires of unknown origin blazed through then dry grasses around the farm lands and the underbrush of the pine forests between Marsh Harbour and Snake Cay.

“Fires continue to burn up to press time with the Volunteer Fire Department responding to numerous calls as flames draw near to properties in Marsh Harbour. Despite a steady cloud of smoke lying across the airport runway, the airport has been able to remain open through the weekend of April 11 and 12.”

Today we took a dinghy ride to another nearby resort, Sea Spray Resort and Marina located on White Sound, Elbow Cay. “Unfussy lodging offering a restaurant & an open-air bar, plus an outdoor pool & a private marina.”  It was a great place to enjoy the beach and then visit the Dockside Bar for lunch and a couple beers! Especially since they carry Steve’s special imported beer…Miller Lite!!! VERY FEW places do!

“Sea Spray Resort & Marina is a tropical Bahamian paradise and protected boat haven… Nestled between the mint green waters of White Sound on the Sea of Abaco and the sparking blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Sea Spray Resort & Marina’s natural beauty, peaceful surroundings and warm clear waters provide the perfect backdrop for your fishing adventure, relaxing vacation or simply a short stay on your boat tour of the Bahamas Island chain.”
