Happy birthday to me! ; ) At 6:30 am Steve was taking Abby on a pee run to shore, great weather, no wind and beautiful sunrise. Our chart plotter revealed the extent of movement we thought we were experience in the light wind overnight! By 7:00 am we were all underway with absolutely flat water. Beautiful day cruising! We decide to anchor at Great Sail Cay. Not much for overnight anchorage, small uninhabited rocky island, but has protection from possible weather. Great Sail Cay is one of the few acceptable anchorages along this course and is about halfway between Crab Cay, Great Abaco and West End, Grand Bahama.
The anchorage at Great Sail Cay is an elongated area that lies between a point on the south end of Great Sale and a long skinny bar of rock extending an additional 2.5 nm to the south. At the north end of the anchorage there is protection from all directions except south and in the south end of the anchorage there is exposure from south through west. In prevailing easterly winds anchoring anywhere in the lee of the long rocky bar will provide a decent night’s sleep but if a cold front is expected then the strategy is to go as far north as draft permits for the best protection flat water anchor in Great Sail Cay.
Arriving after a beautiful day of cruising, we set anchor and went ashore with Abby for a walk then had a couple drinks on the bow and watched the beautiful birthday sunset!
