Forecast for today was for waves 2 to 4 feet subsiding to 2 feet or less in the afternoon. We decided we would be crossing Saginaw Bay after the waves had subsided so we left Harrisville headed for Harbor Beach at 6:30 am….we were a bit premature.
We arrived at the Harrisville Harbor of Refuge “none the worse for wear.” We were told there was a Maritime celebration today so we walked to town on the picturesque bike trail. Town was like a ghost town which seem odd considering the celebration…then we turned the corner to the beach and there was at least 2000 people!!
The festivities included sand volleyball tournaments, jet ski races, bounce houses, arts and craft fair, live music, food booths….and kettle corn or pork rind vendors every 25 feet! They must be popular items around these parts.
Michiganders were definitely taking full advantage of this beautiful day during their short summer season. The beach and water were loaded with boats, kayaks, jet skis, beach chairs, umbrellas, barbecues and inflatables in every form!!
Back at the marina, we met our new dock neighbors (Dick and family) and were only mildly surprised that they were from Punta Gorda. I think we’ve met more people from Punta Gorda in Michigan than we’ve met in Punta Gorda! The we were treated to fireworks off the beach!
